If you want an Appwrite alternative built around Postgres, the real question is how close you want your app to sit to the database. Appwrite is a full backend platform whose default app database, TablesDB, is reached through Appwrite's own API and SDKs. In 2026 it also added native managed PostgreSQL, but that is a raw engine you connect to with drivers, without the Appwrite SDK layer on top. WoWSQL takes a third path: every project is a Postgres database, and the REST API, SDKs, auth, storage and realtime all sit directly on those Postgres tables.
This post compares the two so you can pick the one that fits your app.
Key facts
- Appwrite (checked 27 October 2026): default database type is TablesDB, with DocumentsDB, VectorsDB, native PostgreSQL and native MySQL as other options. Native PostgreSQL runs PostgreSQL 18 by default with "no Appwrite layer in between".
- Appwrite Cloud regions: Frankfurt, New York, San Francisco, Singapore, Sydney and Toronto are available. Bangalore is listed as "coming soon".
- WoWSQL: a managed Postgres backend with an auto-generated REST API, auth, storage, realtime and an MCP server. Regions are Mumbai (the default) and US East 1.
- WoWSQL pricing: Free at $0, Pro at $25 a month and Scale at $99 a month (pricing page checked 27 October 2026).
- SDK:
new WowSQLClient({ projectUrl, apiKey }).table('todos'), from@wowsql/sdkon npm, with SDKs for 11 languages in the docs.- Company: WoWSQL is built in India, DPIIT-recognised and part of NVIDIA Inception.
Why developers look for an Appwrite alternative on Postgres
Appwrite is a well-known open-source backend (BSD 3-Clause, around 57,000 GitHub stars when we checked). Teams usually start searching for an alternative for one of three reasons.
The first is SQL. TablesDB gives you typed columns, rows, relationships and indexes, but you query it through Appwrite's query API rather than writing SQL against your app data. If your team thinks in joins, views and Postgres functions, that layer can feel like a translation step.
The second is the split between Appwrite's two worlds. Appwrite's docs say it plainly: native PostgreSQL gives you the raw engine with your own ORM and migrations, while TablesDB, DocumentsDB and VectorsDB give you Appwrite SDKs, platform permissions and serverless scaling. You choose one or the other per database. If you want both SQL and a ready-made app API on the same tables, you build the glue yourself.
The third is location. For apps whose users are mostly in India, Appwrite Cloud's nearest available region today is Singapore. Bangalore is on their regions page as "coming soon", with no date.
How WoWSQL approaches the same problem
WoWSQL starts from a Postgres database and generates the app layer from your schema. Create a table in the dashboard or with SQL, and it is immediately available over REST at https://<slug>.wowsqlconnect.com/rest/v1, and through the SDKs. Auth lives at /auth/v1, file storage at /storage/v1 and realtime at /realtime/v1/websocket, all on the same project host.
Here is what reading and writing data looks like with the TypeScript SDK:
import WowSQLClient from '@wowsql/sdk';
const client = new WowSQLClient({
projectUrl: 'your-project',
apiKey: process.env.WOWSQL_ANON_KEY!,
});
// Read
const open = await client.table('todos').select('*').get();
// Write
await client.table('todos').insert({ title: 'Compare BaaS options', done: false });
Because the tables are ordinary Postgres tables, the schema you design is the API you get. There is no second data model to keep in sync. Our instant REST API for Postgres guide walks through filtering, ordering and pagination on that API in more detail.

Where Appwrite is the better choice
Appwrite has a large community, a long track record and a wide product surface: messaging, functions, hosting for sites, and a GraphQL API. If you want schemaless documents or a vector store as first-class database types, it offers both. Its self-hosted edition lets you choose PostgreSQL, MariaDB or MongoDB as the backend, with PostgreSQL as the default in current install docs. If your users are spread across Europe, North America and Australia, Appwrite's six live regions cover more ground than WoWSQL's two.
Where WoWSQL fits better
WoWSQL is the simpler choice when you want Postgres to be the single source of truth and you'd like the app API generated for you. It also helps when your users are in India and you want the database in Mumbai today, not when a region launches. If your concern is keeping data in India, our data residency guide explains what a Mumbai region does and doesn't cover.
It is also a good fit for AI-assisted development. WoWSQL's hosted MCP server at https://mcp.wowsql.com/mcp lets tools like Claude and Cursor list your projects and tables, run SQL and search the docs, with a read-only mode if you want guardrails.
The free plan includes one project, 256 MB of database storage, 512 MB of file storage, auth, realtime and the REST and MCP APIs, with no credit card needed. Pro at $25 a month adds a dedicated Postgres instance, 10 GB of database storage, daily backups with 7-day retention and Edge Functions.
Moving an app from Appwrite to WoWSQL
There is no one-click importer, so plan a short, deliberate migration.
- Map your data model. Turn each Appwrite table or collection into a Postgres table. Relationships become foreign keys, and nested JSON can go into
jsonbcolumns. - Export and load the data. Export rows from Appwrite through its API, then insert them with the SDK, the REST API or SQL in the WoWSQL dashboard.
- Recreate permissions. Appwrite permissions are attached to rows and tables. In WoWSQL, decide which checks live in your server code and which tables the anon key may touch. Our Postgres authentication guide covers verifying user tokens on the server.
- Move users. Ask users to sign in again or reset passwords, unless you've confirmed a hash import path with us first.
- Swap the client code. Replace Appwrite SDK calls with
client.table(...)queries. Realtime listeners move toclient.realtime, as shown in our Postgres realtime guide.
Run both backends side by side for a few days and compare row counts before you switch traffic.
Comparing other options too
Appwrite isn't the only open-source backend people weigh. If you're also looking at Supabase, Neon or PocketBase, our best Supabase alternatives roundup and Indian Supabase alternative guide cover those. If self-hosting matters most, read our self-hosted options comparison. WoWSQL's self-hosted edition is Apache-2.0 on GitHub, with some services shipped as prebuilt Docker images.
FAQ
Is Appwrite built on Postgres?
Partly. Appwrite Cloud now offers native managed PostgreSQL as one database type, and its current self-hosting docs default to PostgreSQL. The default app database, TablesDB, is used through Appwrite's API rather than direct SQL.
What is the best Appwrite alternative for Postgres?
It depends on what you need. If you want Postgres tables with an auto-generated REST API, auth, storage and realtime on top, WoWSQL is built for that, with regions in Mumbai and US East 1. Supabase is the other common choice.
Does WoWSQL have a region in India?
Yes. Mumbai is WoWSQL's default region, and US East 1 is also available. Appwrite lists Bangalore as "coming soon" as of 27 October 2026.
How much does WoWSQL cost compared with Appwrite?
WoWSQL has a free plan, Pro at $25 a month and Scale at $99 a month. Appwrite's dedicated database compute starts at $10 a month per database on top of its plans, so compare full monthly totals for your workload.
Can I use SQL directly with WoWSQL?
Yes. You can run SQL in the dashboard, through the wowsql CLI with wowsql db query, and through the MCP server's execute_sql tool. Your app reads and writes the same tables through the REST API and SDKs.
