Indian Supabase Alternative: Postgres BaaS in Mumbai

WoWSQL is a Postgres BaaS built in India: database, Auth, Storage, Realtime, REST and MCP in Mumbai and US East 1. How it compares with Supabase, honestly.

WoWSQL is a backend-as-a-service (BaaS) built on PostgreSQL by an Indian company, WoWSQL Technologies Private Limited (Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu). It covers most of what teams use Supabase for: a Postgres database, Auth, Storage, Realtime and auto-generated REST APIs. It also adds a hosted MCP server for AI assistants and MERA, an AI SQL assistant. Projects run in Mumbai, India or US East 1.

This page explains what is the same, what is different and where Supabase is still the better choice. For a deeper feature-by-feature write-up, see our earlier WoWSQL vs Supabase comparison.

Key facts

  • What it is: a Postgres backend-as-a-service (database, Auth, Storage, Realtime, REST, Edge Functions, hosted MCP) from WoWSQL Technologies Private Limited, Tamil Nadu.
  • Regions: two regions, Mumbai and US East 1. Both are live.
  • Pricing: Free $0, Pro $25/month, Scale $99/month (USD).
  • Not a drop-in: WoWSQL has its own SDK (new WowSQLClient({...}).table(...)), so plan to rewrite supabase-js calls.
  • Trust signals: DPIIT-recognised startup and a member of NVIDIA Inception.

Why developers in India look for a Supabase alternative

Supabase is an excellent product, and it already has a Mumbai region. Developers in India still give a few recurring reasons for looking elsewhere:

  • Access interruptions. According to news reports (TechCrunch, 27 February 2026), Indian ISPs including Jio, Airtel and ACT Fibernet blocked access to supabase.co after an order issued on 24 February 2026 under Section 69A of the IT Act. Apps that called *.supabase.co from the browser stopped working for users on those networks until Supabase reported access restored on 3–4 March 2026. WoWSQL can't promise immunity from any government order. What it does offer is an Indian legal entity that Indian regulators and customers can contact directly.
  • An Indian vendor for procurement. Some customers, including enterprises, education and government-adjacent projects, prefer contracts with an Indian company. WoWSQL Technologies Private Limited is registered with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (CIN U62013TN2025PTC186985).
  • Data location. Some teams want their primary database in India. WoWSQL projects can be created in Mumbai.

What WoWSQL gives you

  • Managed PostgreSQL, with Row Level Security, extensions and standard Postgres clients.
  • Auth: email and password, magic links, OAuth (Google, GitHub, Apple), JWT and MFA, working alongside Row Level Security (the anon key respects RLS).
  • REST APIs generated from your schema by PostgREST at /rest/v1/<table>.
  • Realtime: subscriptions to table changes, plus broadcast and presence.
  • Storage: S3-compatible buckets with CDN delivery and policy-based access.
  • Edge Functions in TypeScript on Pro and Scale.
  • Hosted MCP server (mcp.wowsql.com/mcp) with OAuth 2.0, read-only mode and per-project scoping, for Claude, Cursor, VS Code and ChatGPT.
  • MERA, an AI assistant that writes SQL in the dashboard.
  • Self-hosted edition, open source under Apache-2.0 (GitHub).
  • SDKs for TypeScript, Python, Go, Java, PHP, Ruby, Rust, Swift, Flutter, Kotlin and C#.

Where Supabase is the better choice

  • You need GraphQL or a broad catalogue of extensions and integrations today.
  • You need many regions worldwide, or a formal compliance report for procurement.
  • Your team relies on Supabase-specific features, community templates or a large hiring pool that already knows it.

If those matter most, stay on Supabase. Use its Mumbai region if latency to Indian users is your main concern.

Moving from Supabase to WoWSQL

Both platforms are Postgres underneath, so your data and schema move with standard tools:

  1. Export your database with pg_dump (schema and data).
  2. Create a WoWSQL project in Mumbai or US East 1.
  3. Restore with psql or pg_restore.
  4. Review RLS policies. The self-hosted edition ships auth.uid(), auth.role() and auth.jwt() helpers. Confirm how your Supabase policies map on WoWSQL Cloud, and test each one with the anon key after restore.
  5. Update your client. Replace supabase-js calls with @wowsql/sdk. The APIs are different, so plan a client migration:
import WowSQLClient from '@wowsql/sdk'

const client = new WowSQLClient({
  projectUrl: 'myproject',
  apiKey: 'wowsql_anon_your_key_here',
})

const users = await client.table('users').select('*').get()
  1. Move files from Supabase Storage buckets to WoWSQL Storage buckets.

Other Indian and India-hosted options

You should know the field. As of 18 October 2026, other options showing up in Indian search results include:

  • MayonDB: an India-hosted Postgres backend option.
  • Voroa: managed PostgreSQL in Mumbai. Database only, with no built-in auth, storage or realtime.
  • Self-hosting Supabase on an Indian cloud or VPS: full control, but you run the stack yourself.
  • Zoho Catalyst: a serverless platform from Chennai-based Zoho. It isn't built around Postgres.

WoWSQL fits teams that want the full Postgres BaaS stack (database, Auth, Storage, Realtime, APIs and MCP) from an Indian company, with a free tier and an open-source self-hosted edition.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an Indian alternative to Supabase?

Yes. WoWSQL is a Postgres backend-as-a-service built by an Indian company, with two regions: Mumbai and US East 1. MayonDB and Voroa (database only) are other India-hosted options.

Is WoWSQL compatible with Supabase?

It uses the same building blocks: PostgreSQL, PostgREST-style REST paths, Row Level Security, S3-style storage and Realtime. It has its own SDK (@wowsql/sdk with WowSQLClient and .table()), so plan to update your client code.

Can I keep my data in India?

You can create your project in the Mumbai region so the primary Postgres database runs in India.

Does WoWSQL bill in rupees?

Published prices are in USD (Pro $25/month, Scale $99/month). See /pricing for current plans.

Is Supabase still available in India?

Reports say access was restored after the early-2026 block, and Supabase lists a Mumbai region. Check current status before deciding. This page doesn't argue that Supabase is unusable in India.
