Indian Firebase Alternative: Postgres vs Firestore

An Indian Firebase alternative vs Firestore: Mumbai regions, SMS OTP providers, billing currency, DPDP, and when Firebase is still the better pick.

Most "Firebase alternative" articles compare features. Indian teams also need to know where the data sits, how phone OTP gets billed, what currency the invoice comes in, and what the DPDP Act means for them. This post compares Firebase (Cloud Firestore) with WoWSQL, a Postgres backend built by an Indian company, on exactly those points. Where Firebase wins, we say so.

Key facts

  • Data model: Firestore is a NoSQL document database. WoWSQL is PostgreSQL: tables, joins, SQL and Row Level Security.
  • India regions: both can keep data in India. Firestore offers asia-south1 (Mumbai) and asia-south2 (Delhi). WoWSQL offers Mumbai (ap-south-1, the default) and US East 1.
  • Free tiers: Firestore's Spark plan gives 1 GiB stored, 50K reads/day and 20K writes/day. WoWSQL Free gives 1 project, 256 MB database, 512 MB files and 5 GB bandwidth, with no card required.
  • Phone OTP: Firebase bills phone auth per SMS on the Blaze plan. WoWSQL connects to your own SMS provider: Twilio, Fast2SMS or MSG91.
  • Billing: WoWSQL's published prices are in USD (Pro $25/month, Scale $99/month). There's no INR price list on the pricing page today.
  • Company: WoWSQL Technologies Private Limited, Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. A DPIIT-recognised startup and a member of NVIDIA Inception.

Postgres or Firestore: the real difference

The biggest decision isn't the vendor. It's the database model.

Cloud Firestore WoWSQL (PostgreSQL)
Model Collections of JSON-like documents Tables with types, foreign keys, constraints
Queries Indexed queries on a collection, no joins Full SQL: joins, aggregates, window functions, views
Access control Firebase Security Rules Postgres Row Level Security + API keys (anon key respects RLS)
Reporting Export to BigQuery SQL directly, or pg_dump to any Postgres tool
Lock-in Firestore-specific data and rules Standard Postgres; schema and data export with pg_dump

If your app is mostly "a user has many orders, each order has line items, show me revenue by city", Postgres fits more naturally. If your app is a chat feed with offline-first mobile clients, Firestore's model and SDKs are hard to beat.

India-specific checks

1. Region and latency

Both products can keep your primary data in India. Firestore has Mumbai and Delhi regions. A WoWSQL project defaults to Mumbai. Latency depends on where your app servers run as well as your users, so put the database in the same region as your backend. Then measure from there with psql's \timing or your own request logs. Don't rely on vendor numbers.

One Firebase detail matters for India. According to Firebase's pricing page, the no-cost Cloud Storage quotas for *.firebasestorage.app buckets apply only to buckets in us-central1, us-west1 and us-east1. A storage bucket in Mumbai is billed from the first byte on Blaze.

2. Phone OTP and SMS

Phone login is common in Indian consumer apps. Firebase bills phone auth per SMS on the Blaze plan, at rates published by Google. WoWSQL doesn't resell SMS. You connect your own provider under Auth → SMS / Phone OTP, and Twilio, Fast2SMS and MSG91 are supported. You then pay that provider directly, at its rates, and you handle its DLT registration requirements.

3. Currency and invoices

WoWSQL publishes its prices in USD: Free $0, Pro $25/month, Scale $99/month, with 7% off on yearly billing. We don't publish INR pricing or GST invoice details on the pricing page, so ask us before you assume either. Firebase usage is billed through your Google Cloud billing account. Check that account's currency and invoicing settings for your company.

4. DPDP Act 2023

The Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 doesn't require all personal data to stay in India. Section 16 lets the government restrict transfers to countries it notifies. Choosing a Mumbai region on either platform is a sensible data-location control, but it doesn't make you compliant on its own. The details are in our data residency guide for Postgres in India.

5. Who you contract with

Some Indian customers, especially in education, government-adjacent work and enterprise procurement, prefer an Indian vendor. WoWSQL Technologies Private Limited is registered in Tamil Nadu (CIN U62013TN2025PTC186985). Firebase is a Google product.

Mapping Firebase concepts to WoWSQL

Firebase WoWSQL
Firestore collection Postgres table (/rest/v1/<table>)
Document ID Primary key (UUID recommended)
Security Rules RLS policies + anon/service keys
Firebase Auth (email, Google, phone) WoWSQL Auth: email/password, magic links, OAuth providers, TOTP 2FA, phone OTP via your SMS provider
onSnapshot listeners Realtime subscriptions to INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE
Cloud Storage for Firebase WoWSQL Storage buckets
Cloud Functions Edge Functions (Pro and Scale)

A minimal TypeScript read looks like this:

import WowSQLClient from '@wowsql/sdk'

const client = new WowSQLClient({
  projectUrl: 'myproject',
  apiKey: 'wowsql_anon_your_key_here',
})

const orders = await client.table('orders').select('*').get()

Migrating from Firestore, in outline

  1. Design tables from your collections. Nested maps usually become child tables; arrays become join tables or jsonb.
  2. Export Firestore data (for example, to JSON) and transform it into CSV or SQL inserts.
  3. Load it into a WoWSQL project in Mumbai.
  4. Rewrite Security Rules as RLS policies, and test them with the anon key.
  5. Move users. Plan for users to reset passwords or sign in again, unless you've confirmed a hash-compatible import with us.
  6. Swap the client SDK screen by screen.

This is a real migration, not a config change. Budget for it.

When Firebase is still the better choice

  • Offline-first mobile apps that depend on Firestore's local cache and sync.
  • The wider Firebase toolkit: Cloud Messaging, Crashlytics, Analytics, Remote Config and Test Lab, all in one console.
  • Scale and maturity. Firestore regional locations carry a published 99.99% uptime SLA. WoWSQL doesn't publish an SLA percentage.
  • Existing Firebase expertise on your team.

Choose WoWSQL when you want SQL and relational data, Postgres you can take anywhere, Indian SMS providers you pick yourself, and a vendor registered in India.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an Indian alternative to Firebase?

Yes. WoWSQL is a Postgres backend-as-a-service from WoWSQL Technologies Private Limited in Tamil Nadu. It covers database, auth, storage, realtime and REST APIs, with a Mumbai region.

Can Firebase store data in India?

Yes. Cloud Firestore offers regional locations in Mumbai (asia-south1) and Delhi (asia-south2). You choose the location when you create the database, and you can't change it afterwards.

Does WoWSQL bill in rupees?

Published prices are in USD. INR billing isn't listed on the pricing page, so contact us if you need it.

Which SMS providers does WoWSQL support for phone OTP?

Twilio, Fast2SMS and MSG91. You configure them under Auth → SMS / Phone OTP and pay the provider directly.

Is WoWSQL DPDP compliant?

Compliance depends on how you, the Data Fiduciary, collect and process personal data, so no hosting choice is compliant on its own. WoWSQL lets you keep the primary database in Mumbai. Ask us for details on backups and data flows.
